Rap and Hip-Hop Stars Encourage Voters Not To Be Afraid of Long Voting Lines
The “troubled” voting state of Florida got some encouragement from rap stars Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs this past weekend.
During a “Last Chance for Change” rally on Sunday at Florida Memorial University, the duo told voters not to be discouraged by long lines at polling places with Combs saying, “We have to do it for our children, we have to do it for the people that died for us to have the right to vote.”
Music executive Kevin Liles pointed out that fans have endured long lines for everything from CDs to Jordans, so a line to perform voters’ sacred duty should be no problem. “We ain’t afraid of no lines!” he joked.
Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and artist Mary J. Blige were also in attendance, showing their support for Barack Obama.
When an announcer asked who had already voted, several in the crowd responded with cheering enthusiasm.
Combs has long been a proponent of the youth, with his “Vote or Die” campagin from four years earleir and nonpartisan ground Citizen Change.
And this election has proved to be particularly moving for young voters, with record-breaking young voter registration and record-breaking early voting.
